Educational Psychology Service, Aberdeenshire

Summary

Educational Psychologists work at the level of the individual child or family, the school or establishment, and the local authority. Their core service is consultation. This may involve working collaboratively with practitioners to improve outcomes for all children and young people, or working with practitioners and parents who have a concern about a particular child or young person. They can provide advice and contribute to solutions in relation to a wide range of social, emotional, behavioural and learning issues which can impact achievement, attainment and wellbeing. Educational Psychology Assessment is a continuous process whereby the Educational Psychologist works directly with those seeking to change a particular issue. Assessment involves considering information beyond the individual child, such as classroom or school factors that may have an impact. The Educational Psychologist usually joins the assessment process after people directly involved with the child or young person have already gathered information and put supports in place. Educational Psychology assessment aims to be minimally intrusive, and will therefore be based on indirect involvement with the child in the first instance. Assessment information may be gathered through consultation with a teacher, parent, carer or other professionals, or through a teacher using an agreed framework. Where necessary, an Educational Psychologist may use, for example, classroom observations, analysis of work, curriculum-based assessment, dynamic assessment, or person-centred planning techniques to supplement the assessment. The approaches used will depend on the questions to be answered and on the context within which the difficulties arise. Parents may request a psychological assessment within the context of the Additional Support for Learning Act, 2004 and 2009 and its amendments. The purpose of Educational Psychology assessment is to inform interventions that address an identified need. Interventions are designed to be minimally intrusive, and therefore they are often carried out by those who know the child or young person best. Many interventions are helpful to a number of children and young people. For example, Educational Psychologists work with schools to embed nurturing approaches to practice, and to develop autism-friendly and dyslexia-friendly environments. Educational Psychologists have a Research and Development role. This may involve writing up case studies, carrying out enquiries, evaluations and literature reviews on issues relating to learning and teaching, and contributing to local and national strategic developments within education and children’s services.
